Daniel's Hospitalization

Daniel came down with his first respiratory infection on June 21st starting as a simple head cold and quickly spreading to his chest. Children with SMA have a very weak cough and frequently become very ill with even the simplest colds often leading to pneumonia.

On Friday the 22nd Daniel was rushed to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City due to respiratory distress. Dad stabilized him in the ambulance using his Bipap machine and oxygen. He was intubated (a breathing tube placed to help him breath) on the 24th.

Doctors are very optimistic Daniel is getting better each day. He is breathing on his own, working with physical therapy, and happy to see Granny Annie, Grandma Joyce, and Grandpa Lewis. He will be having surgery shortly to get a feeding tube placed so that we can help him gain some needed weight. His breathing tube will likely be removed after the surgery and hopefully Daniel will be back to his jolly old self very soon.

We will try our best to keep the blog updated as new news arises. Mom is at the hospital 120 miles away from home and dad is commuting on the weekends to see Daniel because he needs to work at the clinic in West Wendover.

Please keep Daniel in your prayers in this very great time of uncertainty.

Sunday, June 9th to Sunday, June 17th

Hope all had a Happy Father's Day or as Daniel says "DaDa"  Day!  Our weekend was great! Daniel is doing well.  Angie, our PT from Nevada Early Intervention, was here on Tuesday.  She always has helpful hints on how to get Daniel moving and exercising.  Angie suggested getting him into the pool as much as possible.  We have a wonderful pool here in
West Wendover!  Every Monday and Wednesday we have a play date with our friends at the pool!  Daniel loves it!

We are still seeing small movements that we did not see before.  We are very hopeful that his recent treatment will be successful.  We pray that it gives him a bit more control and comfort.

Daniel remains a very happy baby with tons of smiles for everyone he meets.  We are currently planning fundraisers in multiple sites (all over the country) for August 4th.  It seems that everyone wants to celebrate Daniel’s birthday, even if they cannot be here with him.  If anyone wants to participate or plan an event….please let us know.

Granny Annie had some beautiful buttons made up with Daniel’s picture.  If anyone is interested in having one to wear, please email us.  We have a limited supply but we want everyone that wants to wear one daily…to have it.

We hope to update this blog every week or two.  Please keep checking back for updates.

Daniel did very well on our trip to the Dominican Republic.  It was a long trip there and back but he was a trooper.  We did need the oxygen in flight so we are so greatful to Rich from Bennett Medical Services in Elko for loaning us the oxygen concentrator.  A very big THANKS goes out to Marilyn and her co-workers at Delta Airlines here in Salt Lake City.  Marilyn made our trip so much easier and sent us away with so much love and support.  She was also here to meet us as we flew back into Salt Lake City.  Marilyn's mother, Kathleen, made Daniel a special "jungle themed" quilt.  Daniel loves it!  As you can see by his pictures with Marilyn, he just loves her!

We met two other families while in the
Dominican Republic who were there for treatment.  Pictured here are Mathew and his parents, Neal and Susie.  They were so friendly and helpful!  We hope that we see them again soon!

Daniel's treatment session went well.  Daddy was allowed to start his IV, which I am sure made Daniel feel a bit safer.  We were allowed to lie with him in the hospital bed and the whole procedure only took a couple of hours.  The clinic staff was wonderful, especially Dr. Rader and his wife Debra.  We could have not asked for a better experience.  It is a little early to see improvements or progress but we have noticed some extra movement in Daniel's legs.  We try to get him into the pool as much as possible since he is able to move a bit easier there.  As you can see from the pictures, he loves the going to the pool!

We encourage all to write to us for more information regarding his treatment.  We try to answer emails as fast as possible!
